DETAILED TIMELINE
1878 – “a number of men are now at work at Mr Atkinson’s Coal mine near Berrima driving a tunnel and we understand that coal will shortly be delivered from there at Moss Vale Station. Some time ago coal from the adjoining land (Brereton’s) was tested on the railway and pronounced to be good, but we have every reason to believe that the coal from Mr. Atkinson’s mine will prove to be better and fully equal to best Newcastle.”
Town & Country Journal. 9th Nov, 1878 (ex Trove)
1878 – There is interest in sampling Mr. Atkinson’s mine near Berrima as coal sampled some 400 yards away several years earlier proved satisfactory for the Railways Dept. (DoMAR 1878)
