DETAILED TIMELINE

1878 – “a number of men are now at work at Mr Atkinson’s Coal mine near Berrima driving a tunnel and we understand that coal will shortly be delivered from there at Moss Vale Station. Some time ago coal from the adjoining land (Brereton’s) was tested on the railway and pronounced to be good, but we have every reason to believe that the coal from Mr. Atkinson’s mine will prove to be better and fully equal to best Newcastle.”

Town & Country Journal. 9th Nov, 1878 (ex Trove)

1878 – There is interest in sampling Mr. Atkinson’s mine near Berrima as coal sampled some 400 yards away several years earlier proved satisfactory for the Railways Dept. (DoMAR 1878)

1879 – A coal sample from J. J. O. Atkinson’s Mine, Berrima;

  • Moisture 1.26
  • Vols. 26.61
  • F.C. 62.28
  • Ash 9.40
  • S 0.45
  • S.G. 1.408

No mines are yet at work at Berrima but a company is being formed to work Mr. Atkinsons land. A proposal to construct a locomotive tramway to near the town of Berrima, from where it is anticipated the Government will construct a line to Moss Vale.

(DoMAR 1879)

1880 – A section of the coal seam and overlying strata is taken where the seam has been opened out by the Berrima Coal-mining and Railway Co. 2-1/2 miles north west of the town of Berrima. The adit has been driven 4’-5” high in the lower part of the seam where the coal is hard and bright. The coal is similar to Cataract Ck. Mine and is situated about 1 mile north east of the Cataract mine which belongs to the same company. Mr. Swinney is the colliery manager. (DoMAR 1880)

Note: 1904 – ex article on Great South Road – “……a bridge over the Midway (sic) Rivulet or Carrada at 86 miles was the farm of James Atkinson.”  ??? (SMH 1/8/1904 p11)
